What is an activated carbon filter?

An activated carbon filter is a filter with 'activated carbon' through which water passes before we drink it. The filter works like a magnet: charcoal is "activated" giving it a positive charge. Negatively charged particles adhere to the filter as a result. The carbon filter also removes chlorine from the water.

Chlorine in our drinking water

Since 2005, it has been prohibited by law in the Netherlands to use chlorine or related products to purify water. What the organic bacteria are that are removed from the water with the filters is not entirely clear. In other countries, chlorine is occasionally still used. This causes drinking water there to have a typical taste. But even without a carbon filter this is easy to solve: leave your glass for a few hours (in the refrigerator), the chlorine will evaporate by itself.

Other organic bacteria?

What is meant by "organic bacteria" is not entirely clear, because one of the main properties of bacteria is that it is always organic. In case there are harmful bacteria in our water, they are already filtered by the waterworks. With what? With an activated carbon filter!

Unhardening of water?

The hardness of water is determined, among other things, by the amount of calcium (lime), magnesium and other minerals. This is different everywhere because the origin of tap water is different everywhere. These particles are not removed from the water by the carbon filter. By the way, water softening can also have negative consequences, because we actually need the minerals found in tap water.

Still use a carbon filter?

Do you decide to use a bottle with an activated carbon filter anyway? Then make sure to change it regularly, because the water that flows back from your mouth (back wash) quickly causes such a filter to be full of bacteria that can develop into mold, among other things.
